Spring into Spring with your Sports, Vintage or Antique Car

4/18/2017

Sports, Exotic, Antique, Vintage and Classic cars are more often than not kept in the garage over the Winter and brought out in the spring to enjoy them for summer use in our area.  It's important to remember that cars where made to be designed to be driven and when they sit around for too long things begin to break.

If you're car has been sitting in the garage all winter, its a good idea to bring it in and have us check over everything just to make sure that it's all in working order and not going to cause you problems in the middle of a fun and relaxing drive.

Here's some of the items that we'll look at and repair or replace if necessary:
  • Replace all your fluids.  Change all fluids if your car has been stored all winter, and run the car a bit to get everything flowing again.
  • Check all rubber boots and bushing for wear.  Small cracks last year could have lead to complete cracks over the winter.
  • Check all the tires for cracks, proper inflation and alignment.
  • Check all the hoses and wires to make sure they are all in good shape.
  • Check all the lights and electronics to make sure they are working properly.
  • Check the latches, cranks, windows, heating units and lubricate as necessary.
  • Check the AC and heater.

Jefferson 500 & Kastner Cup 2015

The 13th annual Kastner Cup race was held at Summit Point Raceway (Summit Point, West Virginia) as part of the four day Jefferson 500 vintage race event. The organizers, Vintage Racer Group (VRG) made Triumph the featured marque for 2105.  As part of the Marque celebration the Kastner Cup was held in conjunction with the Jefferson 500.  It marked the first time the the original 1969 & 1972 Kastner built GT6's where together and raced not the track in too many years to count.  We're excited that both reside in our garages!

The Jefferson 500
The Jefferson 500 was held on May 14-17, 2015, first ran twenty years ago when Bill Scott, the track owner, and his friend Brian Redman brought vintage racing to this charming, "old school" track. Brian Redman was again the Grand Marshall of the event for 2015. VRG’s event included a Thursday practice day, a driver's school for novices and three days of qualifying and racing. The all-Triumph Kastner Cup race was held on Saturday. Typical race groups Triumphs are in was under 1.5 liter, and 1.5-2.5 liter.

The Kastner Cup
The Kastner Cup race honors R.W. "Kas" Kastner, who ran the U.S. Triumph racing program in the 1960s-1970s, and has over 50 years experience in the automotive and racing industry. Kas himself was be in attendance, presenting the Cup to the car and driver selected for the awards and visit our Paddock.  In fact, our two cars where the featured cars in all the group photos!
The Kastner Cup is awarded to one Triumph Competitor each year. First awarded at Mosport Canada in 2003 and then each year after at a different track around the USA. It has been to many famous tracks such as Portland Intl. Raceway, Watkins Glen, New York, Hallet Oklahoma, Laguna Seca and Atlanta Georgia along with Topeka, Kansas, Road America in Wisconsin, ButtonWilow California, Eagle Canyon, Texas, and the last race at Summit Point in Virginia. An effort is made to each year to arrange a locality that will give Triumph racers in various sections of the country a chance to compete for the Cup.

The same driver cannot win the cup in successive years. The award is based on 50% for the competitive results on the race track during the event (not necessarily the winner), 25% for the presentation of the car, and 25% for the attitude and interest in Vintage racing.

Summit Point is a good track for Triumph cars - the main circuit is 2.0 miles, ten turns, 400' of elevation change, with lots of good twisty bits and a 2,900 foot main straight. The track is located about 70 miles west of Washington D

"My original GT-6 is here and featured in the front of the pack. The famous blue and white color scheme is hard to miss. Had not seen this car since I sold it in 1972. It still has a lot of the original paint." ~ Kas Kastner

Kastner Cup 2015 Race Report
"As you know by now, Mark Wheatley won the Kastner Cup race at Summit Point in Virginia. Great guy. Mark is always fast right out of the box on the first day, but as the race days wind down people finally catch up with him and overtake his time. This time with the rain he did the job. Tony Drews was within a car length at the end, so Mark was glad that it ended when it did. Black flags, people called in, Barker, Dick Stockton who had a fantastic fast TR-4 that no one could touch and also Scott Jansen, missed seeing a black flag and were called into the paddock thus taking them out of the competition. Too bad they were all fast. Barker, that crazy guy came from dead last all the way through the field in the wet to 5th overall in his fantastic Herald, and then called into the black flag area. Stockton had a huge lead and was a shoo-in for the cup and the black flag deal got him, same with Scott Jansen for the winning class GT-6. Too bad. Just for a good deal though Charlie Dolan in my old GT-6 won the GT-6 class. It really pleased me to see that GT-6 of mine old team racing at real speed. I've driven around 1200 miles since presenting the trophy yesterday."

We closed down for 5 weeks and did a complete winter overhaul of our facility.  We had the bare bones to work with and it was just about time for a complete makeover our our place.

So, On December 7, 2014 we invited many of our friends over to take a look at the work we had done. We finally got a fresh coat of paint on the building and got the one side of the brick pedstal removed at our entrance.  Yes, we know you thought that that was just an insurance trap get you to crash when you're leaving our place but it wasn't. Its' gone now. It was just as annoying to us so you know :-)

We also spent a lot of time on the inside. We've got so much racing history that we've gathered over the years that we felt we really needed to dedicate an area as a museum.  So we created one!  You can take a look at our MUSEUM page when you get some time.  We wanted to create a nice area for company's, car clubs and even Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to visit us and learn more about race cars the deep roots it had here in the "burgh.

We hope you enjoy the slideshow below and would love to have you over for a visit to our 'new' place.

A big special Thank You to Tripp Clark of Open Throttle 360, Matt Little of Matt Little Photography, Manfred Woodall of Group 16 and Bernard Martin of Rapid Production Marketing for getting some great photography!

Macy's Thanksgiving Holiday Parade in Pittsburgh via WPXI

The folks at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix reached out to us to bring some Vintage Race Cars to the Macy's Holiday Parade in Pittsburgh. WPXI captured some great picture of our family and racercars.  We got everything unloaded and ready to go a few hours before the parade started.  It was cold.

As we staged for the parade we where a bit concerned about the cars overheating during the parade but we didn't get the engine temp over 120 degrees on any of them the whole time!

We ended up in a tunnel waiting in the line. I guess you could call that a sort of 'wind tunnel test" for the vintage cars.  A couple drivers suggested that we swing into the State Store and get some whiskey to keep warm :-).

All in all it was really a great time and we made some terrific memories helping out the PVGP charities.

Fast Company Productions was proud to be a part of the inaugural “Brickyard Invitational” supporting many of our Pittsburgh based Vintage Race Teams.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted more than 600 of the world’s finest and most historic racecars as they competed on the 2.439 miles road course as well as running exhibition events on the famed 2.5 miles oval as part of the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational on June 6-8 2014.

The “Brickyard Invitational” weekend was the largest gathering of race cars ever assembled for competition in America. The SVRA had 11 groups of cars spanning 100 years of vintage machines in action at IMS.  The Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational is a series of races for various classes of vintage racing automobiles and  the event was sanctioned by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association.

Al Unser Jr. and his partner Peter Klutt won the inaugural race while sharing the driving duties in Klutt's No. 42C 1969 Chevrolet Corvette, with six-time Indianapolis 500 starter and four-time top-10 finisher Eliseo Salazar and his partner Gary Moore finishing second in Moore's No. 98B 1965 Mustang GT350.

Rounding out the podium in third place was two-time Indianapolis 500 starter Willy T. Ribbs, who drove the No. 5 1972 Corvette owned by his driving partner Ed Sevadjian. Other past Indianapolis 500 participants included 1996 winner Buddy Lazier, Scott Goodyear, Dick Simon, Lyn St. James, Mark Dismore, Johnny Parsons Jr., Alex Lloyd, Pete Halsmer, Robby Unser, Rocky Moran, Jaques Lazier, Robby McGehee, Spike Gehlhausen, Billy Roe, Scott Harrington, Rick Treadway, Tom Bagley, Bob Lazier, P.J.
